Automotive Industry

At JN White, we understand the rigorous demands of the automotive industry. Our expertise in durable, high-performance materials, combined with innovative engineering and capabilities, allows us to deliver custom solutions that enhance automotive interiors, exteriors, and critical component functionality.

What We Create for the Automotive Industry

Custom Automotive Graphic Overlays

Ensure your dashboard displays, control panels, and keypads stand out with durable, precision-engineered graphic overlays that can withstand extreme conditions and daily use. In the automotive industry, components must maintain reliability over years of constant operation. Buttons and switches require lifetime actuation, and graphic overlays must endure challenging environments, including exposure to moisture, temperature fluctuations, and chemical cleaners. With years of experience in the industrial electronics sector, we have the expertise to select the optimal materials. Our engineers work closely with clients to identify the best graphic overlay solutions based on specific applications, performance needs, and budget considerations.

Membrane Switches

Our membrane switches are designed to meet the unique demands of the automotive industry, where reliability, precision, and durability are paramount. These switches are a crucial interface between drivers and vehicle controls, offering a seamless, tactile experience that enhances both functionality and user satisfaction.

  • Customizable Backlighting: Integrated backlighting solutions, such as LED or EL (electroluminescent) lighting, are available to enhance visibility and usability in low-light conditions. These backlit switches ensure easy control access at night or in dimly lit vehicle interiors, improving both safety and user experience.
  • Tactile Feedback and Precision: Our membrane switches can be customized for varying levels of tactile response, ensuring precise and consistent actuation. Whether it’s a soft touch for luxury vehicles or a more pronounced feedback for heavy-duty applications, we tailor the switch feel to your specifications.
  • Seamless Integration with Touch Interfaces: Modern vehicles are increasingly incorporating touch-sensitive interfaces, and our membrane switches can be designed to work seamlessly alongside capacitive touch screens, enabling intuitive and user-friendly control for everything from climate settings to infotainment systems.
  • Design Flexibility: Our membrane switches are highly customizable in terms of size, shape, color, and layout. This flexibility allows for integration into various parts of the vehicle, from dashboards and center consoles to steering wheel controls, where both form and function are essential.

Labels and Decals

From branding to instructional labels, our weather-resistant graphic overlays and labels adhere to various surfaces, including plastics, metals, and glass, maintaining clarity and color integrity for the life of your vehicle.  While functionality is key, visually striking graphics, compelling designs, and a high-tech aesthetic can significantly impact buyer decisions. We can help you achieve the perfect combination of textures, finishes, and colors, keeping your brand on-point and aligned with market trends. With digital printing, we offer cost-effective solutions, allowing for true photographic images and virtually any custom look.

Die-Cut Gaskets and Seals

Our die-cut gaskets and seals are engineered to deliver top-tier performance in demanding automotive applications. These components are critical in ensuring the long-term reliability and functionality of vehicles, particularly in areas where vibration damping, soundproofing, and weather resistance are essential.

  • Vibration Damping: In an automotive environment, vehicles are subject to constant motion and vibration, which can lead to component wear and noise over time. Our die-cut gaskets are designed to absorb and dampen vibrations, reducing the risk of parts loosening or failing and ensuring a quieter, smoother ride.
  • Soundproofing: A quiet cabin is crucial for both driver comfort and passenger experience. Our gaskets and seals act as sound barriers, preventing noise from engines, road conditions, and wind from entering the cabin. By reducing sound transmission, these components contribute to a quieter, more serene driving experience.
  • Weather Resistance: Exposure to moisture, dust, and extreme weather conditions can compromise vehicle performance. Our die-cut seals provide an airtight and waterproof barrier, preventing the ingress of water, dirt, and other contaminants that could damage sensitive components or lead to corrosion.
  • High-Performance Materials: We use a variety of advanced materials, including rubber, foam, silicone, and other elastomers, to ensure optimal performance under harsh conditions. These materials are selected for their ability to withstand temperature extremes, chemical exposure, and physical stress, making them ideal for both interior and exterior automotive applications.

Key Considerations for Automotive Projects

Durability and Resistance

Automotive environments present some of the toughest challenges for components, with exposure to extreme heat, cold, UV light, moisture, and chemicals. Each product we create is designed to withstand these conditions:

  • Heat and Cold Resistance: Whether components are used in the engine compartment or interior cabin, they must endure a wide temperature range. Our materials and processes are selected to ensure performance across temperature extremes, from hot climates to freezing conditions.
  • UV and Weather Resistance: Components used on the vehicle’s exterior or dashboard are often exposed to direct sunlight, leading to potential fading, cracking, or deterioration. We select materials that offer UV resistance, preventing discoloration and degradation over time. For exterior applications, we ensure products are waterproof and resistant to corrosion from rain, snow, and salt.
  • Chemical Resistance: Automotive components often come into contact with various fluids such as gasoline, oils, cleaners, and de-icers. We use materials that resist chemical degradation to prevent damage and maintain functionality in the presence of these substances.

Safety

Safety is a critical concern in the automotive industry.

  • Illuminated Controls: For nighttime driving or low-light conditions, backlit controls are essential. We provide customizable backlighting solutions for membrane switches and overlays to ensure visibility and easy access to controls while maintaining a focus on driver safety.
  • Fire and Flame Retardant Materials: Certain automotive components require the use of flame-retardant materials, especially for parts close to electrical components.

Customization and Branding

Automakers need components that not only function perfectly but also align with their brand’s design and aesthetic. Our customization capabilities allow us to match both functional and visual specifications:

  • Tailored Designs: Whether you need a specific size, shape, color, or texture, we can customize our products to integrate perfectly into your vehicle’s design. From membrane switches to graphic overlays and in-mold decorations, our engineering team works closely with you to achieve the look and feel that matches your brand identity.
  • Branding Opportunities: Custom graphic labels, decals, and overlays provide an excellent opportunity for branding. Whether it’s a logo on the dashboard or a label on an exterior component, we ensure that your brand stands out with crisp, durable, high-quality printing that resists fading and wear.

Prototyping and Short Runs

We offer rapid prototyping services to help you visualize and test your designs before full-scale production. Our flexible manufacturing capabilities also allow for short-run production, giving you the ability to test and refine components in real-world settings.

RUGGARDIZED TACTICAL VEHICLE ASSEMBLY

A DoD manufacturer reached out to JN White® to assist in the engineering of a complex membrane assembly (this one is not a switch) with a unique backlighting solution that incorporated light-diffusing layers, side-firing LEDs, and dead front paneling.  The product, which is a rectangular interface with three large warning lights, needed the warning lights to be invisible when inactive and highly visible when active.

3D MODELING FOR MANUFACTURING CASE STUDY

A global manufacturing customer approached JN White® for assistance engineering a new, complex manufacturing membrane switch. The project required many iterations, 3D modeling and extensive engineering support. In the end, the virtual prototype produced by JN White® provided the customer assurance that they would receive exactly what they needed within appropriate tolerances.
