Ruggardized Tactical Vehicle Assembly

A DoD manufacturer reached out to JN White® to assist in the engineering of a complex membrane assembly (this one is not a switch) with a unique backlighting solution that incorporated light-diffusing layers, side-firing LEDs, and dead front paneling.  The product, which is a rectangular interface with three large warning lights, needed the warning lights to be invisible when inactive and highly visible when active.

How JN White® Helped

With this project, the JN White team worked especially hard in developing a backlighting solution that would be visible through the entire surface area of the warning light and wouldn’t leak into adjacent areas.

  • Dead Front Panels. The product, which will be used in a military vehicle, required a very precise dead front paneling system that would prevent the user from seeing warning lights when inactive. To accomplish this, the JN White team engineered and manufactured a graphic overlay with a light-blocking layer and transparent, dead front ink that lights up when white light is illuminated behind it, which meant that the warning lights were hidden until activated.
  • Custom Backlighting Solution. When activated, each of the three warning lights needed to appear bright, contrast with the dark background, and prohibit light leaks into their neighboring, inactive warning lights. To accomplish this, the JN White team created custom-edge acrylic light diffusers alongside side-firing LEDs. This shot light into an acrylic disc, which seamlessly scattered and diffused the light across the now lit-up warning symbol.

Our team also worked on custom components of the membrane switch, including a metal subpanel assembly and an intricate printed circuit board assembly.

  • Metal Subpanel Assembly and Custom Connector. As a part of their product, customers occasionally need a solution outside of the JN White. For this project, we collaborated with one of our highly-trusted industry partners to design an extremely complex metal subpanel that matched our specifications. The custom connector also required a specialized design to adhere to the military specifications.
  • Printed Circuit Board Assembly. Typically, sensitive electronic components adhere to a flexible circuit board, but in this design the JN White team chose to use a rigid, printed circuit board that better matched the project goals.

The Result

While this product is still in the prototyping phase, we are confident that our customer will be satisfied with the technology developed and implemented throughout this engineering and manufacturing process.

"Very pleased with your team's response to our need during the COVID-19 crisis."
Lisa L., Medical Device
"JN White has been exceptional in working with our company in order to develop the look and feel of our new MRI patient worn transmitter. We had originally worked with a prior manufacturer for an earlier version of this product with much less desirable results. JN White delivered a clean professional product at a very reasonable price on time!"
Gary P., Medical
"We had very little information to work with and Jessica James made it nearly effortless on our end to get us exactly what we needed in a timely manner."
Lexi W., Industrial Equipment
"Getting any after-market graphic overlays done always has a certain risk factor in getting it all right. You guys were helpful, patient, & knowledgeable to achieve the best end result. Even pointing out some things that might be [an] oversight or [areas for] improvements. The outcome was perfect."
John S., Technology
"The print task was between the USA and Australia and everything went so smooth. I submitted a drawing, got a return email for me to confirm what I wanted. Even though this was over the Christmas period the print was waiting for me when I got back to work after the holidays. Great job and thanks."

"I found working with Sara to be a pleasant experience. We were trying to dial in the color to get just the right look on the printed substrate...Sara sent us a sample print sheet that had several variations, up and down, from the colors we specified, which allowed me to pick exactly the color we wanted. The end result product is perfect!"
