How JN White® Helped
Through a collaborative effort between JN White® and the customer, the design and engineering teams worked through the challenges and came up with a solution.
- Product and Housing Redesign. The optical bonding process had to take every part of the prototype into consideration. The JN White® team worked with the customer to mechanically redesign the product housing so the user interface would fit perfectly.
- Incorporating a Capacitative Touch Screen Into a Membrane Switch. The need for a capacitative touch screen also brought an additional layer of complexity to the process. While the JN White® team had worked with resistive touchscreen displays before, a thicker capacitative touch screen required a new fixture design and assembly.
- Optical Bonding Process in a Clean Room. The optical bonding process was perhaps the most complex piece of the assembly. The highly controlled process of optical bonding must be done in a cleanroom, as it takes the OCA (optically clear adhesive) layer and carefully affixes it to one of the two surfaces. The two surfaces are then brought together in the most precise manner possible as to not disrupt the adhesive. Any disruption to the adhesive could blemish the display or the layer underneath rendering both useless and scrap.
The Result
The delivered prototype both met the expectations of the customer in design, function, and usability and resulted in additional and extensive capabilities in optical bonding for JN White®. The successful use of an ultra-precise optical bonding process between an mechanical membrane switch and capacitative touch screen display produced a satisfied customer and a complicated product assembly that lived up to expectations.
