Integrating Solar Charging Into A Durable Polycarbonate Overlay For Outdoor Industrial Applications

JN White received a request from a customer developing a product used to weigh large-scale vehicles such as trucks and aircraft. The device required a user interface overlay that could not only withstand extended outdoor exposure but also supplement the product’s battery life using integrated solar technology. The customer needed the solution to be robust, weather-resistant, and able to function without frequent manual charging—an important consideration for devices deployed in remote or rugged environments. JN White was tasked with developing an interface that seamlessly combined durable construction with integrated solar charging capabilities.

To meet the project’s specific requirements, JN White developed a rugged, optically clear user interface overlay that incorporated solar charging components directly into its structure—without compromising durability or functionality.

Screen-Printed Polycarbonate Overlay

The front layer of the interface consisted of a high-quality screen-printed polycarbonate overlay. This material offers excellent durability, abrasion resistance, and UV stability—ideal for long-term outdoor exposure. It also serves as the visual interface for users, with clear and readable graphics that hold up to harsh conditions.

Integrated Solar Panels

A key innovation in the design was the integration of solar panels within the overlay. These panels were embedded in an optically clear window, allowing maximum light transmission while maintaining the strength and weather resistance of the overlay. The solar panels provide supplementary power to the product while it is stationed outdoors, helping to extend battery life and reduce the frequency of manual charging.

Flying Lead Wires for Power Connection

To connect the solar panels to the product’s internal electronics, flying lead wires were incorporated into the assembly. These wires were carefully routed to maintain reliability and prevent interference with the adhesive layers and overlay structure.

Gasketing and Mounting Adhesives

To ensure a complete environmental seal and secure installation, JN White used a die-cut 3M adhesive gasket on both the front and back surfaces of the overlay. This provided robust protection against moisture, dust, and debris—critical for outdoor industrial environments.
Additionally, the backside of the overlay was lined with 3M mounting adhesive to enable secure attachment to the product housing, even in extreme temperatures and exposure conditions.

The Result

JN White successfully developed a multifunctional overlay solution that not only met the client’s durability and environmental standards but also incorporated solar energy harvesting into the interface itself. The combination of a rugged polycarbonate overlay, integrated solar panels, dual-layer gasketing, and reliable electrical connectivity resulted in a robust and efficient component. This design supports prolonged outdoor deployment and contributes to longer operational cycles for the weighing equipment, making it well-suited for applications in transportation, aviation, and other heavy-duty industries.
